Royal Waves is Adam Smith (guitar, piano) John Daniel (drums), Adam Miltner (guitar, synthesizer), and Nate Bishop (bass, piano). The quartet formed in 2006 in Westlake, Ohio. Adam Miltner and John Daniel had been working together for over a year when they collaborated with guitarist Adam Smith. After meeting only a few times, the trio created their first song called “Shore”, an instrumental track. Following the song’s creation, local bassist and friend Nate Bishop was added to the trio making up what is now the band Royal Waves.
The band set out to create instrumental music that appealed to all types of listeners. Drawing influences from such diverse artists as Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, and Coldplay, being tied to one musical genre would limit the range of Royal Waves’ musical spontaneity. With many of the songs being written through extensive improvisation, the music of Royal Waves has the opportunity to grow and develop into a finished product over time. Creating unique sounds and experimenting with different musical styles help Royal Waves establish a soundtrack to life. Each song provides a means for the listeners to lose themselves within the music and take away from it their own personal meaning.
Over the past few years, Royal Waves has released two self-recorded EP’s and played a number of local shows and benefit concerts, including appearances at the Barking Spider, Phantasy Concert Club, and Mojo’s Coffeehouse. They released their first EP called The Evening Recordings in 2007. The band received a great deal of positive feedback from the local community following the 2007 release. In 2008, Royal Waves released their highly anticipated second EP entitled Lightworks. Concertgoers and fans have described the music as “innovative” and “refreshing”, among many other accolades. Reviewers on Garageband.com praise Royal Waves with comments like “Blissrock at its best…contemplative and nostalgic…” and “…almost dreamlike”. The sound of Royal Waves has often been compared to the likes of Pink Floyd and Radiohead. These reviews solidify the band’s commitment to creating not only great music, but also a complete musical experience.
While Royal Waves continues to write and record new music, the band’s ambition grows larger. They hope to build on their current success and widen their fan-base by playing more concerts and distributing the music to more people. And as the band members look to the future, they hope for the opportunity to be able to leave their mark on music for many years to come.
